Hi, I’m Ruth Smart from Copper Braid Products in Liverpool and I’d like to talk to you briefly about our range of
copper braids for power applications.
I’ve got a couple of our power connectors here. This for copper braid busbar for example would be used for connecting
a standby power unit onto a busbar system and what we’ve got here is a very flexible connection where we’re going through 90° in a short relatively short distance and this would be really quite difficult to do with a cabled alternative.
What we’ve got is layers of different copper braid so if I fan them out like that you can see the range we’re doing and we’re bringing them down into a rectangular termination into which we drilled a stud hole.
For this sort of application what we need to know from you is your full load current, your short circuit characteristics if you have them, the dimensions that you want us to achieve, the diameters of the stud holes, whether there are any width limitations, length limitations and also whether or not you need it to be insulated.
I’d also like to show you this unit, this is 700 Square mil 2,000 amp full load current. As you can see it’s bent through 90° which would be extremely difficult to do by cables or any other conductor system and most importantly I’d like to
show you this because this really illustrates the flexibility that we can achieve with copper braid.
This example is for connecting Transformer to a busbars, we’re going from metric to Imperial, we’re going from a narrow busbar connection to a wide busbar connection and we’re achieving this by multi-layering the braid and then fanning the braid out to give a much wider connection. This again would be very difficult to do with cables or any
other solution so if you would like to find out more information on how we can design a solution that will save you
time and money please give me a call.
Thank you.

Transcript:
Hi, I’m Ruth Smart from Copper Braid Products in Liverpool and I’d like to talk to you briefly about our range of Earth Bonds.
These are typically round tinned copper braid, I know this looks like steel but it’s actually tin plated copper and on the ends we crimp on terminals like i have done with this and these are used typically earth steel doors to frames or cladding to frames and here we have a bigger one which i’d like to show you because we’ve got different size stud holes at each end to give you some idea of the flexibility that we can provide for you.
What we would need from you is some idea of the current rating or size of the copper braid that you would like us to use, the distance between the hole centers and the diameter of the throttles that you’d like us to use we can also
insulate these earth bonds using polyolefin insulation such as these green and yellow sleeves which would designate that the bond is for earthing purposes.
So if there’s any more information that you’d like on this range of products or to find out how we can save you time
and money please give me a call. Thank you.

Copper Earth Straps

Explanation of the range of copper braid earth straps available from Copper Braid Products and their applications by Ruth Smart.

Video by Sam Kearney and Adam Bradley

Transcript:
Hi, I’m Ruth Smart from Copper Braid Products in Liverpool and I’d like to talk to you about our range of earth straps and how we can help you save time and money.
We make a really wide range of earth straps, everything from tiny little ones like this up to much bigger units.
I’d like to talk to you about some of the issues that we need to take into consideration when we are designing straps for your application.
First of all the copper braid itself normally flat, this particular one is plain copper but we can do tinned copper as well. The difference between them is that the tin copper is more resistant to oxidization, it won’t go green, so if you are using it in an outdoor application or somewhere it’s damp please tell us and we’ll use tinned
braid.
We also need to know the length, we normally work between the whole centers like that because that’s the effective working length of the earth strap.
We also need to know whether or not you want them insulated. We can do black Polyolefin insulation like this, which is rated to 660 volts or we can also do green and yellow insulation like this which would be typically used for an
earthing application.
So if you would like us to show you how we can save you time and money with your strap requirements please don’t hesitate to give me a call.
Thank you.

The Complete Guide to Copper Braid: Earth Straps, Earth Bonds and Flexible Busbars

In the world of electrical engineering, reliable connections are paramount to safety and performance. At Copper Braid Products, we have established ourselves as the UK’s leading specialists in manufacturing high-quality copper braid products, including essential components like earth straps, earth bonds, and flexible busbars. Our expertise spans decades, making us the trusted choice for engineers and electrical professionals across multiple industries.

Understanding Copper Braid: The Foundation of Flexible Electrical Connections

Copper braid is a sophisticated electrical component created by weaving together multiple strands of copper wire into a flexible, tubular or flat configuration. This intricate construction provides the perfect balance of electrical conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and durability that rigid copper conductors simply cannot match.

The key to effective copper braid lies in its construction methodology. We manufacture our braids using copper wire strands available in 0.2mm, 0.1mm, and 0.05mm diameters, with custom sizes available upon request. The smaller the wire diameter, the greater the flexibility achieved, though this comes with considerations for volume and cost. Our manufacturing process ensures optimal weave patterns that maximise both flexibility and current-carrying capacity.

Specialist Applications: Earth Straps, Earth Bonds, and Flexible Busbars

Earth Straps: Essential Safety Components

Earth straps represent one of the most critical applications of copper braid technology. These components provide vital safety connections between electrical equipment and earth ground, protecting both personnel and equipment from dangerous fault currents. Our earth straps are engineered to handle high fault currents while maintaining flexibility for equipment that experiences vibration or thermal expansion.

The superior flexibility of braided construction makes our earth straps ideal for applications where rigid conductors would fail due to work hardening and eventual fracture. Whether connecting rotating machinery, mobile equipment, or installations subject to thermal cycling, our earth straps maintain reliable electrical continuity throughout their service life.

Earth Bonds: Reliable Equipment Grounding

Earth bonds serve a similar but distinct role in electrical installations, providing reliable grounding connections between metallic equipment and structures. Our copper braid earth bonds excel in environments where equipment may experience movement, vibration, or thermal expansion that would stress rigid connections.

The multi-strand construction of our earth bonds distributes stress across hundreds of individual conductors, dramatically improving reliability compared to solid copper alternatives. This design philosophy ensures consistent performance even in demanding industrial environments.

Flexible Busbars: Power Distribution Excellence

Flexible busbars represent the pinnacle of copper braid application in power distribution systems. These components provide high-current connections between switchgear, transformers, and other electrical equipment while accommodating the thermal expansion and mechanical stresses inherent in power systems.

Our flexible busbars combine the current-carrying capacity of traditional rigid busbars with the flexibility needed for modern electrical installations. Available in custom widths and configurations, these components solve complex connection challenges that rigid alternatives cannot address.

Antofagasta 2023 report – copper market

The annual report contains an interesting section on the global copper market.

Global refined copper demand is estimated to have been approximately 25 million tonnes in 2023, representing a 3% increase year on year. China continues to be the main consumer, representing 55% of the total with nearly 14 million tonnes.2 To put this in perspective, the second largest source of copper demand is Europe, with a 12% market share of approximately three million tonnes.3 Another major end-user of copper is the United States, which has remained stable at 1.8–1.9 million tonnes of copper demand for the past five years,

As a result of continued economic growth, copper demand in China is also expected to increase by a further 2% in 2024.2

While copper prices remained relatively stable in 2023 compared with 2022, the global market is seeing significant change both in the supply of copper and in demand from key industries. Factors such as grade decline and rising ore hardness are affecting production from existing mines and for various reasons a number of the world’s largest copper producers cut guidance during the year. In China, several factors have created a market in transition in 2023, including a slower than expected post-Covid recovery, with decreased demand from traditional sectors such as property, and emerging demand for sectors linked to decarbonisation.

Chile, Peru and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) represented a combined total of 46% of the 22 million tonnes of global mined copper supply in 2023, with a further 35–40% coming from the next ten countries, including Australia, the United States, China, Indonesia and Russia.

While Chile is home to six of the world’s top 20 mines by capacity, more than any other country, these mines all commenced operations more than 20 years ago and are mature assets facing issues such as grade decline and increasing ore hardness.

Consensus pricing estimates:
Based on 21 contributing banks, the consensus estimates for copper pricing in 2024 and 2025 are $3.90/lb and $4.00/lb.2 In comparison, the current spot price of copper was $3.84/lb as of December 2023.3
